How Much PTO Horsepower Does a TMR Mixer Need?
Use the mixer's documented minimum tractor requirement as the starting point, then verify PTO speed, power available at the PTO, hydraulic connections, drawbar compatibility and the fully loaded wagon weight. Tractor engine horsepower alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
Engine horsepower and PTO horsepower are different
A tractor's advertised engine rating is not always the power available at the PTO shaft. Transmission and auxiliary loads affect delivered power. Compare the mixer requirement with the tractor's documented PTO output and correct PTO speed.
Information needed for a safe match
- Mixer model, nominal volume and maximum documented load.
- Manufacturer's minimum PTO power and required PTO speed.
- Tractor PTO output, not only engine rating.
- Required hydraulic flow, pressure and number of connections.
- Drawbar, hitch, electrical and braking compatibility.
- Loaded wagon weight, gradients, soil condition and stopping distance.
Why the ration affects power demand
Long, dry forage can require more cutting and mixing effort than a dense pre-processed ration. Overfilling, an incorrect loading order or worn knives may also increase load. Provide ingredient form and typical batch weight when requesting a tractor recommendation.

The documented configurations on this website for the SA-9JQL-5 vertical mixer and SA-9JGW-5 horizontal mixer specify a tractor above 40 hp. This is a model-specific reference, not a universal rule for every 5 m3 mixer. Final compatibility must be confirmed against the tractor's PTO and hydraulic specifications.
